Civil Engineer – Steel & Reo (On-Site)

Substation Foundations | 3:1 Roster | Sydney–Wagga FIFO

We are seeking a Civil Engineer for a hands-on site role on a major substation foundation project. This is an excellent opportunity to gain exposure on a large-scale infrastructure project, working closely with an experienced engineering team in a practical, site-focused capacity.

�� Location & Roster

• Sydney – Wagga (FIFO – fly out ASAP)
• 3:1 roster (flexibility can be discussed)
• 11-hour days | 77-hour weeks
• Initial contract: Several months, with potential extension

The Role
You will be working on substation foundation construction, ensuring structural steel and reinforcing steel works are delivered safely and to specification.
This is a hands-on site role, ideal for an engineer who enjoys being on the ground, inspecting works, coordinating contractors, and ensuring quality control.

Key Responsibilities

�� Structural Steel

• Inspect delivered steel for correct grade, section size, and condition
• Check fabrication against approved shop drawings
• Oversee erection sequence and temporary bracing
• Inspect welds and bolted connections
• Verify bolt torque and tightening procedures
• Check alignment, plumb, and level of members
• Attend hold points prior to steel being covered or loaded

�� Reinforcing Steel (Reo)

• Inspect reo placement before every concrete pour (hold point)
• Check bar sizes, spacing, and layout against structural drawings
• Verify correct concrete cover (spacers/chairs)
• Check laps, splices, hooks, and anchorage lengths
• Ensure reo is clean and compliant (free of mud, oil, excessive rust)
• Confirm starter bars and cast-in items are correctly positioned
• Witness and review concrete pours and compaction
• Sign off on ITPs (Inspection & Test Plans)

�� General Site Duties

• Raise and respond to RFIs (Requests for Information)
• Issue site instructions for non-conformances
• Review and approve method statements
• Liaise with foreman and contractors on sequencing
• Keep close oversight of deliveries and verify measurements
• Maintain photo records and detailed inspection documentation
• Ensure compliance with AS 4100, AS 3600, and project specifications
