Running through the heart of Sydney’s northern suburbs to serve the Northern Beaches,
Mona Vale Road is a vital and valued piece of infrastructure for the area’s local inhabitants and millions of visitors annually. However, it’s also a source of frustration. Several 6-lane motorways filter into Mona Vale Road’s dual lanes, causing excessive congestion during peak periods and creating needlessly lengthy journeys.
In order to improve safety, slash travel times and boost traffic efficiency across the entire travel corridor, the NSW Government allocated $140 million to upgrade Mona Vale Road. The ongoing project will see 3.4 kilometres of motorway expanded to 4 lanes between McCarrs Creek Road in Terrey Hills and Powder Works Road, Ingleside.
Providing solutions for Sydney’s northern suburbs
Once complete, this innovative project will streamline the northern suburbs’ commute and upgrade an essential link between Sydney’s northern beaches and the north shore — making it easier and safer for locals to travel. Since certain aspects of the Mona Vale Road upgrade bring their own unique challenges, the project has been split into two.
Working with the motorway’s steep grade, the Mona Vale Road east upgrade will expand the number of safe vehicle overtaking opportunities on this stretch, which are currently extremely limited. As well as additional lanes for climbing and descending, the upgraded motorway will also feature widened shoulders and median separation to improve safety, facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, and a focus on bus priority measures.
Meanwhile, the Mona Vale Road West upgrade will introduce a new shared path for pedestrians and cyclists to provide safe and efficient travel. Thanks to a new local road corridor from Harvey Road to Powder Works Road, it’ll offer better access for Ingleside residents. And the construction of an overpass bridge and underpasses will enable fauna to cross Mona Vale Road safely and access Garigal and Ku-ring-gai National Parks.
For present and future northern suburbs residents, getting from A to B will be a breeze. That’s because the Roads and Maritime Services has approved an 80km/h speed limit between Mona Vale and Belrose once the entire Mona Vale Road upgrade is completed.
Specialist recruitment for the Mona Vale Road upgrade
At TradeConnex, we’re proud to support the Mona Vale Road upgrade by recruiting skilled construction workers across various sectors. Despite the unprecedented outbreak of COVID-19 and the work restrictions it brought about, the project is still on track for completion in 2022, thanks to our diligent and committed workforce.
As well as taking the stress out of the daily commute, expanding this major arterial road will increase visitor footfall and benefit the nearby national park wildlife. It’s a monumental undertaking, so we’re honoured to have played a vital role in the Mona Vale Road east upgrade and the Mona Vale Road West upgrade.
